The famous Rainbow portrait of Queen Elizabeth I in the Marble Hall painted about 1600-1602. It has the Latin motto 'Non sine sole iris' - no rainbow without the sun, which refers to Elizabeth as a bringer of peace after a period of storm. It has been attributed to both Isaac Oliver and Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger. It is believed that it was commissioned by Lord Salisbury for the Queen's visit to Hatfield in 1602.:

Modern replicas of the embroidered Napoleonic banners made for troops from Calvados. The originals are now too old and fragile to be hanging here. They had been taken at Waterloo by the Duke of Wellington who gave them to the 2nd Marquess of Salisbury. Wellington was a great friend of Salisbury’s and was a frequent guest at Hatfield House.
